Lincoln Parks Foundation
The Lincoln Parks Foundation was established in 1992 to provide "margin of quality" financing to the City of Lincoln Parks and Recreation programs and facilities, in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department and local organizations by securing, managing and allocating private funding over and above the responsibility of city government, all in an effort to ensure the continued development and betterment of a quality parks and recreational system in the community. www.lincolnparks.org2015 Vision
In 2006, a group of Lincoln business and civic leaders, now known as 2015 Vision, began to create a new community vision. The vision strengthens research and education, creates jobs and provides new entertainment and cultural opportunities for citizens of Lincoln and Nebraska. To accomplish this vision, the group identified 10 Pillars to Lincoln's Future, including Union Plaza. www.2015vision.orgCommunity
There is strong community support for Union Plaza as indicated by core members of the 2015 Vision and other community leaders. 2015 Vision and Leadership Lincoln officials said that nearly 1,000 Lincoln area residents participated in four focus group meetings held in late January and early February of 2007 to talk about Lincoln's future. Organizers said the large turnout indicated people are very excited about the potential of new development opportunities in the community. A survey was handed out at the end of each evening asking participants to rank the projects.- Citizens indicated the University of Nebraska Research and Development Corridor should be completed first, followed by Union Plaza, the new Haymarket arena, and convention center and headquarters hotel.
- At a retreat in the fall of 2006, the Lincoln Parks Foundation and the Mayor's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted that Union Plaza become their top fundraising priority.
Lincoln citizens love their parks. In a fall 2007 Alltel wireless promotion "Our Community, Our Choice", the Lincoln Parks Foundation won $25,000 after receiving the greatest number of votes from Alltel customers, edging out Lincoln-Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity and The Lincoln Food Bank, two very strong nonprofits in the area. All three charities received $10,000 worth of supplies for their organization.
